On to the Semifinals we go, and the highest-seed still standing is #4 Buckguys. For the third time in the past five years, the three top seeds all exited the building after Quarterfinal upsets. #1 Alabama Men lost to #8 Pain Train, #2 S*Heads lost to #7 Three Stooges, and #3 It’s All About The U lost to #6 OverThinkers. (Buckguys beat #5 Dollz.)
First-round upsets seem less the exception than the rule around here. Going back 21 seasons to 2004, the first year in the ESPN archives:
The #1 Seed has lost 12 of the last 21 first-round playoff games
The #2 Seed has lost 9 of 21
The #3 Seed has lost 8 of 21
The #4 Seed has lost 8 of 21
And misery loves company, too:
Both the #1 and #2 Seeds have lost in 8 of 21 years
The #1, #2 and #3 Seeds have lost in 3 of 21 years
Indeed, only twice in the past 21 seasons — in 2014 and 2017 — have all four top seeds advanced to the next round. Other than that:
At least ONE top-four seed has lost in 19 of 21 years
TWO top-four seeds have lost in 16 of 21
THREE top-four seeds have lost in 5 of 21
Why it happens is anyone’s guess. HOW it happened, at least this year, is pretty clear: The powerhouse teams coming into the playoffs (see below, “He’s Coming in Hot!”) picked the wrong week to stop scoring points. Or at least enough points to overcome some unicorn performances from their opponents.
Top Seed Alabama Men lost to #8 Pain Train 166.44 – 109.80. The loss snapped Men’s three-game winning streak; the 109.8 points was Tom’s second-lowest score since Week 8, and was 13.52 points below his weekly average. Meanwhile, Pain Train posted its highest score of the season, 53 points above its average. (Max has now scored more than 138 points in three of the last five games, which is a big uh-oh for the rest of the field.)
#2 Seed S*Heads lost to #7 Three Stooges 109.9 – 93.34. It was only Kurt’s second sub-100 outing of the year, and his score came in at 20 points below his average and 80 points less than he scored last week. The loss also snapped a four-game winning streak. Meanwhile, Stooges snapped their own three-game losing streak with the win, and scored 6.7 points over their average.
#3 Seed The U lost to #6 OverThinkers 163.60 – 115.24. The U’s score was its lowest since Week 9 and 10.21 points under its average. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Jose. Meanwhile, Thinkers posted their highest score of the season, nearly 60 points above their weekly average, and got their two best single-game player performances of the year (including their first above-40 effort).
#5 Seed Dollz also hit a rough patch in its 115.68 – 72.36 loss to #4 Buckguys. Doug’s guys did what Doug’s guys do, racking up just a couple points more than their season average (the fifth-best in the league). But Dollz logged their lowest score of the season, some 38 points below their weekly average.
Finally, let us praise (if we must), the Three Stooges. The fellas are the fifth rookie team since 2004 to make it to the Semifinals, joining Andy (as Hungry Possums) in 2004, The U in 2005, Pain Train in 2008, and Buckguys in 2009. Of the four previous, two advanced to the Final: Doug and Jose. And only Jose, so far, has won the championship as a first-year ‘Ganger. So U have your work cut out for U, fellas.
He’s Coming In Hot! But is it hot enough?
How hot is hot enough? Alabama Men, S*Heads and Dollz enter the 2024 Playoffs having won four of their last five games, topping 100 points in three (Kurt), four (Thurm) and all five (Tom) of those games. (Buckguys also have scored 100+ in all five.) They’re hot. Who’s hotter? It’s All About The U, with a perfect 5-0 mark in the final five; 100+ in each game, and for good measure, more points scored combined than any other playoff team.

So Many Ties, So Little Time
The final week of the regular season is upon us, and things are really knotted up at the top. Alabama Men, as usual, is alone in the top spot of the Apollo Division and as the top seed in the projected playoffs. But after that, it gets crowded. At 8-5 are four teams: Buckguys, Dollz, S*Heads and The U. All five of these teams have clinched a playoff spot, and all five could win their division or finish second. Except for Men, all could end up a Wild Card team, too. (Tom can finish no worse than second in the Apollo.)
What of the other three playoff spots? OverThinkers, Pain Train and Three Stooges sit in those spots right now, but Heavy Flight and Fartz are just a heartbeat away. ESPN has eliminated two of our three 5-8 teams, but if Juice is still in it (according to them), why aren’t Hurt Locker and Hounds? Hmmm. Playoff permutations to come; please stand by…

For the first time since Week 4, Hurt Locker isn’t in last place in the Apollo Division
Don’t look now, but our cellar-dwellers are rewriting their narratives. Straight Outta The Commode is on a three-week winning streak and just set a season-high for himself at 126.14. And our other last-place team isn’t even in last place anymore: Hurt Locker is on a three-week run of its own, notching two wins and scoring the second-most points in the league. (The U, no surprise, has scored the most.) The two dubs now tie Hurt with Hounds at 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the division, but edges into sixth place by virtue of more points scored.
Other teams are movin’ on up, too. Atop the Apollo, Three Stooges now are tied with Alabama Men at 7-4 and 3-2; Men are awarded first place via the points scored tiebreaker. And atop the Mayor Jeni, Dollz now are tied with Buckguys at 7-4, but earn first place with a better division record (3-2 vs 2-2).

Three wins in a row — and back-to-back in the division — have catapulted Heavy Flight into second place in the Apollo and the #3 Seed in the projected playoffs. An also-ran just three weeks ago, our defending champ has scored 427+ points since; it’s the only team to pile up 400+ over that period, and (shockingly) is nearly 50 points better than the runner-up The U, who had his second — HIS SECOND!!! — 180+ game of the season this weekend.
And speaking of The U: The Points Monster is back in the projected playoffs at the #7 Seed. Fartz is out for now, by virtue of the scoring tiebreaker.
Of course, Flight and everyone else still is chasing Alabama Men… although Buckguys are creeping closer. Men and Buckguys post the same 7-3 record, but Tom’s guys take the scoring tiebreaker to hang on to the #1 Seed.

Week 8, Same 8. But Somebody’s Shuffled the Deck
The same cast of characters populate our projected playoffs, albeit in slightly different roles. Sure, Alabama Men retain the top seed in the Apollo Division and now boast the best overall record to boot. But Three Stooges rebounded from their three-game losing streak to post a dub and, with it, a move into second place in the Apollo. Fartz have Entered The Chat
Late Sunday, Bama Men’s Buccaneers were wreaking a great deal of damage in garbage time, and Fartz wasn’t happy about it. He took to WhatsApp to register his concern, and apparently the fantasy gods were monitoring the thread because come Monday, Fartz’s Jets staged a MNF rally for the win. (Not IRL, of course.) Format
Eight teams qualify for four rounds of playoffs: Quarterfinals in week 15, Semifinals in week 16 and the Final in Week 17. Eight teams qualify for the playoffs: The two division winners, the two division runners-up, and four at-large Wild Card teams based on overall record and points scored.
Division winners are seeded #1 and #2 as determined by (a) overall record then (b) points scored then (c) head to head result/s.
Division runners-up are seeded #3 and #4 as determined by (a) overall record then (b) points scored then (c) head to head result/s
Wild card teams are seeded #5 through #8 as determined by (a) overall record then (b) points scored then (c) head to head result/s.
The remaining six teams are invited to play in the Consolation Ladder in weeks 15 to 17. Ante is $50, winner take all, most points scored wins. (Game results don’t matter.)
