2020 Standings

Final

Bama Men did it, holding off Campton for yet another — and final — week to secure the Total Points Standing championship. btw, Men actually scored the most for-real for-real points this season, so he completely earns that title. And how about this for a fun fact: Tom not only scored the most points this season, but had the most scored against him. Twelve times, his opponent scored at least 102 points. In eight of those, they scored 120+. In four of those, they scored 132+. And in two of those, they scored 156. Good lord. No wonder he had to crank up the offense.

There’s been quite a duel going on at the bottom of the Top Eight as well. In Weeks 10, 11 and 12, Dollz occupied the 7th spot and Hound was locked into the 8th spot. In Week 13 they traded places, and then in Weeks 14, 15 and 16 Scott sat 7th, 8th and 8th but Haydn had dropped out (and sat 9th, 10th and 9th).

Come Week 17: Hound’s Jonathan Taylor goes for 42 in a Hound win, while Dollz comes up short vs Juice. Hound leapfrogs Dollz, grabbing 8th place and kicking Dollz into 9th and out of the money.

Week 16

Holy cow, Santa! It looks like you brought lots and lots of points to all the good (and not-so-good) little boys this holiday. Game scores already were inching up; this week they went yard. Not since Week 3 have the total number of points scored hit the 1500 mark, an average of 108 per team.

And I hope you took the over in the Flight vs Men game. Is the 303 points scored a league record? If it’s not, it should be. (Confirmation to come shortly.) So proud that an ex-Thinker contributed points to both sides. So very, very proud.

Game scores continue to trend up. The average score had topped 100 only twice in the weeks six to twelve, but weeks 13, 14 and 15 have seen an average score of 101, 102 and now 103 points.

Week 10

Don’t talk to Max about the Bears, ok? The Hamsters of the Midway pretty much cost him his Payoff Spot, at least for this week. Pain Train went into MNF with Dalvin Cook and Jimmy Graham, trailing the Dollz by 16. The Dollz were toast, right? But never doubt the Bears’ ability to under-deliver. Cook was held to 14, and Graham put up a Zero. With the win, Dollz leapfrogged Pain (and, for good measure, Hound) in the standings.

If it’s any consolation, Max, it wouldn’t have been any better in the Before Times.

Week 9

We’re into the second half of the season, Gangsters. And it looks like a couple teams made some pretty good halftime adjustments.

From being out of the Payoff Picture in Week 7, Haydn the Hound and Pain Train are now in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Haydn’s on a two-game winning streak and Max continues to score in triple digits, so it’s an elevation well-earned.

On the outside looking in are Katy’s Brother and Fartz, who have slipped into 11th and 12th place. It’s been a rough couple weeks for Chris and Bill, but they’re hardly alone. Five teams scored in the 60s in Week 8, and three scored in the 50s in Week 9. Where did all the points go?

Only one anomaly in our payoff/playoff picture: In the Before Times, Fartz would be in the running as the 4th Seed in the Odds Division (and the 8th overall); this year, Pain Train has taken that spot thanks to his lead in the Total Standings. (And that’s even after the 75-point hit Pain Train takes for his 3-6 record.)

Week 7

Just under halfway through the season and, hmm … the same eight guys occupy the “payoff” spots in Week 7 as in Week 2. (As a reminder, standings are determined by total points scored plus 25 points added for each win and 25 points deducted for each loss.)

Are we (ie, you) to spare a kind thought for us slow starters, then? Has a bad or unlucky start doomed us to a lost season? Um, maybe?

Check this out: The top five payoff teams each won at least two of their first three games. (Overachievers Juice and Jim won all three.) We’ve all heard the stats about how teams that start fast make the playoffs 75% of the time, or some such. So there must be something to this good start idea. Indeed, FiveThirtyEight tracked NFL games between 1990 and 2013 and concluded that 75% of 3-0 teams make the playoffs; that 53% of 2-1 teams make the playoffs, and that 25% of 1-2 teams make the playoffs. That would seem to suggest (stay with me here) that The U, the Hound, S*Heads and Thinkers have as good a chance as Dollz/BYE!, Fartz and Campton on making the payoffs. That’s how stats work, right?

League Standings in the Before Times

Just for fun, let’s imagine a time that wasn’t the end of the world, and we still played by the old rules. Using draft position to set the divisions, here are those standings. Bama Men grab the fourth playoff spot in the Evens Division over Thinkers and The U due to a better division record: Men are 2-2, Thinker and The U are 1-2. And because he does, that means that Campton is the only 2020 Payoff Team to not be a 2020 Playoff Team, as current non-qualifier Buckguys gets in ahead of him.
